Is CentOS Linux 8 destined for extinction?
Red Hat has announced that they will be discontinuing CentOS Linux 8 at the end of the year, focusing their efforts on CentOS Stream. But there may still be hope for CentOS with their latest release.
CentOS Linux 8 2105: based on the latest RHEL 8.4 sources
The newest version of CentOS Linux, based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 sources, was released today. But with the end of the year fast approaching, is this update too little too late?
Bringing in modern features and updates
Last month’s release of RHEL 8.4 included a variety of kernel features and AppStream updates, such as GCC 10 and LLVM 11. While these updates are now available in CentOS Linux 8 2105, it may not be enough to keep it afloat.
Don’t lose hope: alternatives to CentOS
With RHEL 8.4, we also saw the release of AlmaLinux 8.4 and Oracle Linux 8 Update 4. And with the uncertain future of CentOS, it may be better to consider other enterprise Linux distribution options, such as AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux.
