Rewrite and Optimize Article: How to Easily Migrate and Modernize Your Applications with AWS MGN

Discover how you can seamlessly modernize your applications and leave the hassle of manual processes behind with the new AWS Application Migration Service (AWS MGN). With this revolutionary service, you can easily replicate and convert your source servers from any infrastructure – physical, virtual or cloud- to natively run on AWS, saving you both time and effort.

Introducing Post-Launch Actions for Further Support and Flexibility

When AWS MGN initially launched, it only offered direct, lift-and-shift migrations. However, in the wake of customer feedback and requests, we have now added a set of optional post-launch actions to give you more control and flexibility in your migration process. These actions are conveniently managed by the AWS Systems Manager agent, which can be automatically installed as the first post-launch action. We have launched with an initial set of four actions, with plans to add more in the future.

Here’s what you need to know about the four new post-launch actions:

  • Install Agent – The first step to using these post-launch actions is installing the AWS Systems Manager agent. This is essential for all the other actions to function effectively.
  • CentOS Conversion – If your source server is running CentOS, you can easily migrate it to Rocky Linux, without any hiccups.
  • SUSE Subscription Conversion – For those using a SUSE Linux subscription provided by SUSE, you can now change to an AWS-provided SUSE subscription for easier management.
  • Disaster Recovery – Install the AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery Service agent on your server and configure replication to a target region with this action.

Easy Customization with Post-Launch Settings Template

To make things even easier, your AWS account comes with a post-launch settings template that serves as a starting point and provides default values for each new source server you add. You can either use these values as-is or customize them as per your requirements. Simply open the Application Migration Service Console, click on Settings, and review or edit your template.

How to Use the Post-Launch Actions:

  1. Enable the Systems Manager agent as it is a prerequisite for all other actions.
  2. Choose to run the post-launch actions on both your test and cutover instances to thoroughly test the final migrated configuration.
  3. Configure disaster recovery by selecting a target region.
  4. If your source server is running CentOS 8, choose to convert it to Rocky Linux 8.
  5. For easier management, change your SUSE Linux subscription to an AWS-provided one.
  6. Save your template and get started with your migration!

Monitor and Review with Ease

Keep track of all your post-launch actions and their progress with the Migration dashboard for each source server. Any errors that might arise during the execution of an action will be written to the SSM execution log for easy reference.
