Red Hat competitors step up to fill the gap
After Red Hat, CentOS’s Linux parent company, announced its shift in focus from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream, many CentOS users were left feeling frustrated and searching for alternatives. In response, CloudLinux, a company known for its RHEL clone, announced the development of a new CentOS clone called AlmaLinux.
AlmaLinux: The New Contender in the Linux Arena
AlmaLinux, named after the Latin word for “soul,” is a binary compatible community RHEL server Linux fork. Backed by a $1 million annual sponsorship from CloudLinux, it promises to be a strong and reliable alternative for disenchanted CentOS users.
With the first release based on RHEL 8.x, AlmaLinux offers extended support until at least 2029. Its development is community-driven, and CloudLinux has already launched a GitHub page for collaboration. The finalized source code will be available there upon the stable release.
Bug Reporting Made Easy
To ensure a bug-free experience, AlmaLinux also launched a beta version with its own bug tracker. The engineering team at CloudLinux will work closely with bug tickets to deliver a stable and high-performing release.
Users are encouraged to join in on the development process by testing, documenting, and providing support for AlmaLinux. CloudLinux’s CEO, Igor Seletskiy, states, “In the spirit of community-driven initiative, we now require assistance with testing, documentation, support, and planning the future roadmap.”
Live Q+A Webinar to Address Queries
CloudLinux will also conduct a live Q+A webinar on February 10 at 9 AM Pacific Time to address any queries and concerns regarding AlmaLinux. They have also provided a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section and technical details on the AlmaLinux Wiki for further information.
Choose AlmaLinux, Choose Stability
With its promise of stability and long-term support, AlmaLinux emerges as a strong competitor in the world of Linux. CloudLinux’s dedication to the project and collaboration with the community ensure a promising future for AlmaLinux.
